Karl Spidel Receives A Quilt of Valor

A Quilt of Valor is a hand-made tribute awarded to a service member injured in the War on Terror, primarily in Iraq and Afghanistan, consisting of a lap-sized, pieced, quilt-top, batting and backing, assembled by volunteer quilt-toppers and longarmers, and awarded to injured recipients in and out of military hospitals around the world.

On December 11, 2010, patriotic instructor Anne Loechner surprised Karl Spidel with a Quilt of Valor. This Quilt of Valor was awarded to Karl for his service in Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he was wounded twice. Many of his fellow veterans attended the ceremony at VFW Post 1463.

Earlier this year, Karl was instrumental in obtaining the Quilt of Valor for a young marine, LCPL Tyler Harris of Lititz. Both quilts were handcrafted by Joanne Stauffer of Lititz and other members of the Quilt of Valor team.

Karl, a recipient of the Purple Heart, commands the Lancaster County chapter of Military Order of the Purple Heart.
